Never heard of MacDougal
Street? It's the street in Greenwich
Village where Folk Music was fi rst
heard. Surely you've heard of Pe-
ter, Paul and Mary? And now, here
in Quartzsite, we have the "tribute
artists" who are helping recreate the
magic of this group at the Quartzsite
Improvement Association's "Desert
Sky Theater."
The current Mary Alberts (aka
Mary Travers) says she "always
wanted to sing." When she was
four years old she decided that a
talent scout would discover her.
But that didn't happen. So at age
six she climbed atop a fi re hydrant
and sang to the cars stopping at the
intersection! Years later she was
discovered in the Prescott Post Of-
fi ce where she caught the attention
of Ron Skelton (Paul), who thought
"If I ever had a Peter, Paul and Mary
trio, she'd be my Mary… wonder if
she can sing?"
Rick Shore (Peter) came to a con-
cert of theirs and decided to forego
starting his own Peter, Paul and
Mary trio since there was already
a good one. A year later he joined
them and together they've sung
three times in Laughlin and last
year seven times in Iowa. They've
also sung at numerous RV resorts
in Arizona, Nevada and California.
Mary says, "Peter, Paul and Mary
performed for fi fty years. We have
three full ninety minute shows and
we keep fi nding more material,
more jewels."
MacDougal Street West will be at
the Quartzsite Improvement Asso-
ciation (QIA) Tuesday, January
28 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be $15 avail-
able at the QIA offi ce or at the door.
QIA is located at 235 E. Ironwood.
