Gunter gathered volunteers and
sponsors, began raising money to pay
for the food and other costs, and began
planning how to provide the meals.
at anksgiving, they served
1,800 turkey dinners.
Since then, the Fayetteville
operation has served more meals every
year. e goal this year is 10,000 meals.
Meanwhile, additional Operation
Turkey locations have opened in North
Carolina. A Lumberton location
opened in 2016 and a Spring Lake
operation last year. is year, there
are seven more locations in the state
– in Dunn, Henderson, Hope Mills,
Raeford, Raleigh, Warrenton and
Wilmington.
"We all learn from each other and
help each other," Gunter said of all of
the Operation Turkey locations around
the country. at's key since the entire
effort is all volunteer.
Lots of people and lots of moving
parts are involved. Gunter said
Operation Turkey works with social
service professionals, the police,
churches and other organizations
about how to provide dinners and
other items to homeless and needy
people on anksgiving Day.
"My biggest goal is to work with the
entire community," Gunter said.
People can request to have meals
delivered to their homes by volunteers.
Operation Turkey also delivers to
sites hosting group sit-down meals.
People can pick up meals from
staging areas, including the operation's
main cooking location – this year
and last, the Salvation Army's kitchen
on Alexander Street in downtown
Fayetteville.
