Together, they have helped us reach nearly $600,000 toward our $1.3 million campaign goal. Their efforts have already made a tremendous difference in the future of Kappa Delta at North Dakota State. Each of us has contributed to the history of Sigma Psi, and we would like to see everyone recognized for their support. Each donor who contributes $2,500 or more will be recognized on a prominently displayed plaque in the chapter house. All donors contributing $1,000 or more will be listed in campaign publications. If you feel an error has been made in recording your gift, we sincerely apologize. Please contact our campaign coordinator at 785-843-1661 with any corrections. Gifts of any size are encouraged and appreciated as we work together to set Sigma Psi up for success well into the future. Your Kappa Delta legacy does not end when you leave the chapter house—it lives on through the sisters who follow in your footsteps. K ari Johnson Eckert '91 was interested in being Greek, and she says the ΚΔ house felt like the right fit from the first recruitment event. She remembers how welcoming and genuine her sisters were. Kari received a B.S. in psychology from NDSU and a B.S. in mortuary science from the University of Minnesota. She met her husband, Jason, at NDSU. Kari was a funeral director for about 10 years, as well as a partner at a funeral home in Forest Lake, Minnesota, before becoming a stay-at-home mom for her two children, Robbie and Elizabeth. Plans don't always go the way one pictures them. After attending a parent-teacher conference on Oct. 11, 2018, they walked into a parent's worst nightmare. Robbie had died by suicide. A sophomore in high school, he was a student-athlete, had many friends, always had a smile on his face and showed a great deal of empathy for others. "Jason and I had no idea Robbie was struggling nor did his friends." Kari and Jason quickly learned what an epidemic teen suicide was nationally and decided to help by creating Robbie's Hope. Robbie's Hope works with teens to change the conversation around depression, anxiety and suicide while empowering youth with the tools they need to end the stigma surrounding mental health. Robbie's Hope is working to change the dialogue and encourages all parents to have the tough conversations about mental health. "We must teach our youth it's OK to not be OK and to have hope—Hold on! Pain ends." Statistically, up to 50% of middle/high school students have struggled with mental health in the past 12 months, 17% have thought about suicide and 7% have made plans to complete suicide. Kari and Jason encourage everyone to take mental health seriously and know the warning signs of depression. "It's always OK to ask for Kari Johnson Eckert '91 Opens Up on Loss How Sigma Psi Sisters Encouraged Her What makes you passionate about supporting Sigma Psi's capital campaign, and what would you say to alumnae to encourage them to get involved? "I am grateful to be able to support the construction of a new chapter house at NDSU with my contribution. To be able to support youth with the experience of living in a great Greek house at NDSU feels really good—paying it back so others can pay it forward by being a good sister on campus and in their communities. Being a ΚΔ at NDSU helped make me who I am today." - KARI JOHNSON ECKERT '91 (Continued on page 6) As of October 10, 2019
