Diabetes diagnoses in our state have increased by 40% in the last decade. It's the sixth leading cause of death in the state and nearly 15% of Arkansas' adult population suffers from the disease. The cost is high: about $3.1 billion in medical expenses and lost productivity from diaetes and prediabetes. "Arkansas is in what is known as the Diabetes belt, which makes our work at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) extremely important," ADA Director of Development for Arkansas, Malorie Marrs, says. According to the Arkansas Department of Health, the state has had higher rates than the national average for the past 20 years. And a most unfortunate fact is that up to a third of Arkansans with diabetes may not even know they have it, or aren't being treated for it. Get informed, get diagnosed, get treated Unfortunately, of the approximately 400,000 Arkansas with diabetes, about 75,000 of them remain undiagnosed. And nearly 800,000 more have prediabetes, and are at risk for developing the disease. Marrs says there are plenty of tools available, such as the American Diabetes Association website, diabetes.org, which contains a wealth of information about controlling and treating diabetes. Make an appointment with a doctor or a Certified Diabetes Educator, the local ADA can help.
