It must bring sides together." ~ Jesse Jackson Leaders can be found everywhere. Some are at the highest levels of government, while others are right here in our community. Some of our local leaders usually don't think of themselves as leaders, though. They are the ones who give of themselves, always thinking of the needs of oth- ers and how they can help. And Quartzsite is blessed to have many caring and ethical leaders. Certain leadership qualities never go out of style. The ability to connect with and inspire others will always make for great leaders. Remember the Transformational Leadership theory from the 1970's? According to James MacGregor Burns, trans- formational leadership can be seen when "leaders and followers make each other advance to a higher level of morality and motivation." Some would say, "those where the good 'ol days." Transformational lead- ers create an ethical climate (share values, high ethical standards); en- courage followers to look beyond self-interests to the common good; and promote cooperation and har- mony. Nelson Mandela used trans- formational leadership principles while working to abolish apartheid and enforce change in South Africa. Today, we are witnessing a seri- ous breakdown in leadership at the highest levels of government. Lead- ers should support values which build up fellow human beings-not tear people down; they should live with integrity-not get caught in lies every day. Successful leaders show compassion and encourage us to be caring toward each other. Leaders demonstrate how we take care of those in need-not based upon their skin color nor religion; and should make decisions on the impact of future generations. Leaders should recognize the importance of ethical behavior, and inspire others to be the best of who they can be. Imagine the uproar if a local busi- ness owner lied about you to every customer who came in? What if a local business owner allowed an- gry customers to disrupt your quiet meal, because you were just wearing a cross around your neck-or a scarf on your head- or you spoke another language? What if you were turned away at a business just because of who you loved? These are risky business practices and should be not acceptable period. This is not how a business succeeds and it's not how a nation thrives. Well, that's my two cents. Just something to think about, as we cel- ebrate our local ethical leaders and volunteers. You all ROCK!
