ENCOURAGEMENT Early in his life, Thomas knew he wanted to be a pilot. Wade's father supported his decision and laid the runway for his career to take off. He and Wade both enlisted in the Navy, among other brothers who joined as well. "I served eight years of active duty, seven in the reserve, and this year I will be celebrating my 30th year with American Airlines as a captain/check airman on the Boeing 777." Thomas recalls a career high point was the day he got his wings in the Navy. "Flight training was intense, and you had to remain focused. Due to the lessons I learned while at Alabama and being a member of LCA, I was able to push through." Another high point was being hired by American Airlines, making captain. "The only thing that will top those is when I retire!" Alpha-Phi Zeta 3 1917 Club ($5,000 and above) Alton R. Brown III, AF827 Vir Quisque Vir Club ($2,500 to $4,999) Bobby Ray Hicks, AF520 George H. McAbee, AF1176 W hen Thomas Lawhon, AΦ967 reflects on his time with LCA, he's reminded of some of the best memories and times of his life. He recalls the friendships and bonds he made all those years ago at The University of Alabama. His favorite moments were spent attending football games and cheering on the Crimson Tide with his brothers. "The football team at the time was having an exceptional year." Many of the memories that stand out the most involved Mike "Pods" Chesnut, AΦ907, Ralph Wayde Kivette, AΦ911, Harry Appling Jr., AΦ940, Michael Schwartz, AΦ1027, and Tim Cady, AΦ1013. "They all seemed like a great group of members that knew how to have a good time but also focused on the educational aspect of college life," he said. His first years as an Alpha-Phi Zeta member created some of the deepest and truest bonds that Thomas could ever imagine. PRIDE Thomas notes The University of Alabama was an exciting place to be in the 1970s and being part of LCA gives him an immense sense of pride. Many of the members are now prominent businessmen and have had suc- cessful lives and admirable personal lives. "It's empowering to see how far we have all come!" DEVOTION Tomas plans on attending some Crimson Tide games this year, his job permitting. He has been able to visit a few times over the years but admittedly not as much as he would like. "The Chapter is doing well; the football team looks to be following the same pattern as back in the '70s, and—once again—Alabama is the place to be." Thank You for Generously Giving This Year!
