5 L ast semester, I ended my president report by describing the excitement the colony had for chartering at the 180th General Convention. I am proud to report that we officially chartered and earned the title of Chapter. Eight of my brothers and I traveled to Beta's home in Oxford, Ohio, at Miami University at the beginning of August. Along with our charter, the Chapter earned two awards and an honorable mention for our participation in the fraternity's leadership development programs. The Chapter's attendance at the summer sessions of the Wooden Institute is one example of our high participation at these programs. We sent five brothers to two different sessions this summer: Max Kwon '22, Jay Sandlin '22, Pedro Pavao '22, Keith Mokry '22, and Zach Rolfness '22. Three of these five followed up Wooden with their attendance at the 180th General Convention. All of the Wooden Institute participants were freshmen with three of them being initiated in the spring. This was the first year since recolonization that the Chapter recruited more than two members in the spring. In fact, only four fraternities out of 26 at MIT even participated in spring recruitment this year. We carried over that success into the fall. In the fall 2019 recruitment session we recruited 14 new members. This brings our Chapter size to 44, the highest it has been since recolonization. As the Chapter size has been increasing over the past few years, more of our Brothers are becoming involved with our executive committee. Zach Rolfness, who only initiated this spring, returned from Wooden eager to participate. We have now added the position of community service chairman, which he will undertake. He will help our pre-existing philanthropy chairman to continue our success from the spring. By selling boba tea to MIT students, we raised $870 for Transitions of PA, an organization that supports victims of domestic violence. With a new charter, the largest Chapter size since recolonization, and our continued dedication to philanthropy, the Beta Upsilon Chapter has nowhere to go but up.
