By Joanne Winer On September 11, 2019 there was a very special ceremony held at the Heroes Bell Gardens in Celia's Rainbow Gardens in Town Park. The weather was not hot as in past years and the turnout was great. The ceremony began at 6pm with the VFW Freedom Riders coming in on their motorcycles to form an honor guard. They were joined by the newly-formed FVW Junior Honor Guard consisting of many local children. It was so great to see these children participate in this event. The opening prayer was done by Jeff Jones, pastor of Alli- ance Church and chaplain of the Quartzsite Police Dept. Mayor Norm Simpson introduced Council Members Starr BearCat, Lynda Goldberg, Loretta Warner and Beverly Cunningham. He also introduced La Paz County Super- visor Duce Minor. Mayor Simp- son spoke of 9-11 through his ex- perience at the time, and talked of his family members who served in the military. Quartzsite Fire District (QFD) Chief Kevin Hess spoke of his thoughts on 9-11 and recited the Firefi ghter's Prayer. Several fi re- fi ghters and EMTs were introduced. Several of the new cadets were there as well as the ambulance staff from River Medical. Quartzsite Police Department (QPD) Chief William Ponce also spoke and several of the police of- fi cers were also there, including some of the new Explorers. VFW Commander Dennis Dole in- troduced the Junior Honor Guard and spoke about 9-11. After the ceremony, everyone got to ring the two huge bells hanging from the arch, and it really made the event very special. Thank you to QPD, QFD, VFW and Town Hall staff, Town Man- ager Jim Ferguson, and everyone who participated in the ceremony. Also thanks to Parks & Recreation and Public Works employees who put up all the chairs and tables for refreshments. Also I want to thank Rain and the Desert Messenger for getting the word out. This ceremony is very important to do because we need to honor those people who paid the ultimate price on 9-11. One of the six monuments we will be working on over the win- ter will be to honor those who died on that horrible day. They should never be forgotten. There will be several events and fundraisers this winter to help build these monuments. We are hoping to complete them before Heroes Appreciation Day which will be 1pm Saturday, March 7, 2020. If you have any time free over the next fi ve months, please come out to the work sessions we're planning or show your support by attending the fundraisers or making a donation to help get the materials needed. If you have any bricks, stones, ce- ment blocks, or extra cacti, bushes, etc. please call me at 928-927-6551. Your donations will be greatly ap- preciated. Thank you to everyone who made this 9-11 ceremony so special. We hope to see a big turnout for Heroes Appreciation Day, which includes all fi rst responders and the mili- tary. These people deserve to be honored and recognized - those who lost their lives and those who still put their lives on the line every day.
