After 3 years, a jury trial for Mike Roth began Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019 at 8:30am at La Paz County Superior Court with Judge Matthew Newman presiding. Michael Alan Roth, of Quartzsite, AZ, was arrested April 7, 2016 and charged with one felony count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon / Dangerous Instrument. The arrest stems from an encounter while driving a forklift on W. Main Street, Quartzsite. Roth allegedly col- lided with a motorized bicycle driven by John "Jack" Jones who, at the time, former husband of Jennifer "Jade" Jones-Esposito, a 2016 Republi- can candidate for Arizona Legislative District 5. Prosecutors claimed Pros- ecution alleged Roth steered into Jones after Jones cussed at him while both traveled eastbound, causing the bike to run into the curb. Witnesses for the prosecution included Jack Jones, La Paz Co. Sheriff Detective Steven Draper, former Quartzsite Police Officer Everette Bab- cock, and Quartzsite Police Det. Candi Conley. Witnesses for the defense included Michael Roth, Jeff McGrath of 3 Laws Recon, Dr. Paul Range, and Jennifer (Jones) Esposito. Near the end of the second day, the jury was sent home for the night to return the next morning for jury instruc- tions and then closing arguments. Ten jurors had listened intently to all of the testimony and evidence presented. Two jurors were randomly chosen to be alternates, and could not participate in deliberations. After a just a couple of hours deliberating, the eight jurors returned to the courtroom. The Court Clerk read, "The Jury cannot come to a verdict." Desert Messenger spoke to many jury members outside the courtroom. Jurors said there were 6 for Roth and 2 against him. "The State did not prove intent," was said by more than one juror. One juror asked that there were, "a lot of unanswered questions." If found guilty, Roth could have received a mandatory prison sentence ranging from 5 years minimum to 15 years maximum. The next hearing will be held via phone on November 4, 2019 to decide the next steps.
