Birds are chirping, the breeze is crisp, and our faces seem to feel a little more sun. As students long for Spring Break, certain energy fills the air. There is excitement from the anticipation of what each day could reveal. For some musicians, this time of year fosters a longing for fellowship. The desire to get together with others and create music wells up in these two simple words, "Let's J. Justin Harper jam!" Other people may not know what this 'jam' activity means, or why it is surrounded with such a sense of urgency. Some folks may not even know that they already know how to 'jam' and have done it before. The 'jam' has been described as an informal event where musicians gather together to improvise and create music. It is a therapy session and relaxation; it is a time for creativity and experimentation. I'm sure that musicians have practiced this ceremony for thousands of years. Imagine the great composers, sitting down with their friends making music. What sounds did the violin virtuoso Paganini play in his sessions behind closed doors with other musicians? How did David come up with the melodies to the Psalms? Maybe he was sitting around playing the harp with his friends. With the 35,000-year-old bone flute found near the remains of Stone Age humans might have played the same kind of melodies we sing today. So have you tried to 'jam'? It can be a rewarding and enlightening experience. Skill level doesn't dictate how you can contribute. One note can go a long way. I encourage you to find the joys of music in the company of others. You will find it worth your time. CWC FLEA MARKET & CONC C SIGNMENT SHOP. 6111 Dallas Cherryville Hwy, 28016. Sat 23th & Sun 24th, 8am-2pm. Furniture, antiques & housewares. 704616-4355. 3712 W.
