"migrated" upstairs to the wall of the
room that Davis uses for yoga.
e couple's art is wide-ranging but
extremely personal. It includes a print
from Florence, Italy, where they used to
spend time each year when they worked
for Kent State University. at university
has a satellite campus in Florence. It
includes a limited print of an early Dr.
Seuss sketch from "e Sneetches and
Other Stories." Wearden explained they
frequently read the book to their five
children, who are now grown. It also
includes a striking print of a photo taken
by their son on the balcony of their
former high-rise apartment in Chicago.
e shot shows the sun coming up over a
rolling cloud of fog over Lake Michigan.
In the distance is the barest tip of the top
of another high-rise.
ere's also a framed copy of the
1980 Ramones' album "End of the
Century" – both the vinyl record and
the album cover, which was signed back
then by each of the punk rockers. e
provenance is certain because the album
was purchased new by Davis, then a
college student, and she obtained the
band's signatures at a concert in Austin,
Texas.
And there's a large, colorful Seuss-
like drawing created by grateful
Methodist students who were invited by
Wearden and Davis to take showers in
the home when the water in their dorm
was turned off because of a broken
boiler. "Ducky, we're so lucky to have
you on campus," it says.
"Our style is very eclectic," Davis
said.
"We have so many people here –
students, faculty, staff, trustees,
donors – and we really want them
to feel at home with it here and to
feel like they're at our home. The
more we feel at home, the more
they'll feel at home."
