Want more specialized slices of
local history? Consider these diverse
offerings:
"Jacksonian Politics and
Community Conflict: e Emergence
of the Second American Party System
in Cumberland County," by Harry L.
Watson.
Its title might not roll trippingly off
your tongue – and, in fact, it might
sound more than a little dry. But at 333
pages, it's a deeply researched book
with lots of information and anecdotes
about the local people, politics and
economy of the time. Daws says it's one
of his favorite local historical works.
"Carbine: e Story of David
Marshall Williams," by Ross E. Beard.
is a collection of personal stories
about the colorful inventor of the
.30 caliber M-1 carbine. e light
semiautomatic rifle was said by General
Douglas MacArthur to be "one of the
strongest contributing factors" in the
Allied victory in the Pacific in World
War II.
How colorful was its inventor? David
Marshall "Carbine" Williams, who was
born and raised in Cumberland County
in 1900, began working on the design
of his famous gun while in prison for
the death of a lawman who'd raided
his moonshine operation. Williams'
sentence was later commuted and he
became rich and famous, wearing
Stetson hats and long sideburns,
smoking cigars and patenting over 50
inventions. In 1952, Hollywood made a
movie about him - "Carbine Williams"
– with Jimmy Stewart playing the lead.
"Our Century: e Fayetteville
Observer's Sunday Conversations," by
Charles Broadwell.
is hard-to-find but highly readable
book, published in 1999, is a collection
of interviews with 52 local residents
who'd lived through much of the 20th
