T he Cumberland County Senior Community Service Employment Program has been awarded a grant of $482,979 from Senior Service America, Inc. Almost 90% of the grant money will go toward providing temporary employment to at least 94 low- income older adults in Cumberland County and five other counties. e grant money is originally from the U.S. Department of Labor. Senior Service America, Inc., is the Department of Labor's second-largest grantee, providing career training programs for low-income workers age 55 and up in 13 states. Cumberland County SCSEP, commonly referred to as the Senior Aides program, helps unemployed, low- income older adults successfully re-enter the workforce. Program participants are placed in paid work assignments with local non-profits or municipal government for up to 20 hours a week. In some cases, participants are returning to work after an extended period of unpaid caregiving, or a long recovery from injury or illness, or from a premature retirement. e Cumberland County Senior Community Service Employment Program has been helping older citizens for more than half a century and administers the program for Bladen, Lee, Moore, Richmond and Robeson counties. "is grant from Senior Service America, Inc., is vital for the Cumberland County Senior Aides program, which is helping more than 40 local community, faith- based and public agencies carry out their mission," said Cumberland County SCSEP Director Ann Johnson. "e program provides a dignified pathway to self- sufficiency for older workers who remain vital, active members of their community." Agencies that benefit locally from the program include the Cumberland County Association for Indian People, Boys & Girls Clubs of Cumberland County, Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina and the Robeson County Veterans Service Office. e SCSEP office is located at 707-B Executive Place, Fayetteville.
