This course will examine the FSA photographs taken in Arkansas during the years 1935 - 1943. It will briefly review the histori- cal and cultural setting for the photos, explain the "what" and "why" behind the kinds of photos taken in Arkansas, and discuss the unique nature and photographic style of the FSA images. All of this will be presented though a "tour" of photos which focuses on the pictures, the photographers, and the people they photographed. What is it about? How does it work? What are its main ideas? What is the evidence for it? Is it truly paradoxical or is it logically consistent? This course will be based on the non-technical book, Tales of the Quantum, published by the Oxford University Press. The course will cover Chapters 1 through 9 of the book, which can be purchased in hard cover for $22-29, or on Kindle for $10. Enrollees should buy the book and bring it to each ses- sion, reading the appropriate chap- ters in advance of each class session. The course is directed at non-scien- tists, but scientists are welcome, too. No scientific or mathematical back- ground is needed, only curiosity. Max enrollment is 15. After an indoor presen- tation, participants will walk around the grounds at Lake Wedington to see native plant beds, bird houses, and examples of invasive plants along with a demonstration of removal techniques. These will be a classroom session fol- lowed by a short hike that will be easy but not handicap accessible. Johnny Cash's influence on American music via his signature sound and genre-blending tendencies, his activism and philan- thropy on behalf of underrepresented groups, and the ups and downs of his long career will be discussed. Chal Ragsdale, Professor of Percussion at the U of A. will lead participants in an engaging, multi-media presenta- tion that will bring new insights into Cash's story. The course will start with a brief anonymous survey for participants to explore their personal attitudes about crime and criminal behavior, followed by a small group discussion. A brief history of incar- ceration in the U.S. relative to the rest of the world will follow. The bulk of the course will focus on major poli- cies and practices that have given rise to mass incarceration in the United States and its implications for families and communities. The term is often used to de- note religious thought about political principled questions. Scholars such as Carl Schmitt use the term to denote religious concepts that were secular- ized and thus became key political concepts. Immerse yourself in this spe- cial area of study centered on the work of Carl Schmitt and Giorgio Agamben about intersecting politics and theol- ogy. This course will examine its rel- evance for our refl ections in 2019.
