Patri- cia Taylor Kienzle has been conducting volunteer activities in Elaine since 1998 but didn't know any of the history for about 7 years. A grant from the Black History Commission allowed her to write a book, suited for 4th grade stu- dents and older, about a hero from that history, Scipio Jones. A Black Hall of Fame grant allowed Ms. Kienzle to pro- duce a poster for high school students and adults. This class will include some of the his- tory with a diff erent focus than one may have seen before. It will also give some insight into the community that those going to Elaine for interviews, fi lming, etc. may not get. There will be informa- tion about the Lee Street Community Center and how Fayetteville residents contribute to its activities. There just might be a bingo style game with priz- es to help review the information! In its place came a new hard-driving, impro- visational style called Be-Bop. A complex music, Be-Bop was short on singable melodies, hard to follow, and nearly im- possible to dance to. As a result, and in conjunction with the rise of rock and roll, jazz began to fall from favor and was at risk of being classifi ed as something quaint from the past. Starting with the iconic Miles Davis LP entitled Birth of the Cool, and other re- leases by Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, and the Modern Jazz Quartet, a new excite- ment was generated in the 1960s on col- lege campuses across America. Jazz was back in a big way and many credit the Cool style with saving the art form of jazz from extinction. The class will focus on the unique players who made this phe- nomenon happen as well as listening to examples of their music. INSTRUCTOR: Gary Barrow, Ret.
