All the performances are advertised and promoted local- ly, but there is nothing like having a small group sit down with the people who are large and in charge of these events. OLLI members should take advantage of UA Theatre performance discounts after they have listened to the previews of the coming attrac- tions. Currently, nuclear power is maligned in much of the U.S. and the West. This course will examine the past, present and future of nuclear power (world-wide) with emphasis on the challenges it entails. Participants will leave with a full understanding of how nuclear power is an essential component of our response to cli- mate change. This workshop is hands-on, and interac- tive to help you match your interests/ talents to appropriate magazines. Marilyn H. Collins is known for her practical workshops. She will show participants ways to structure your ar- ticle ideas to match the format of spe- cific magazines, conduct successful interviews, follow submission guide- lines, and become a "go-to" author that editors will seek for future work. Sample magazines will be provided to analyze or you may bring your own magazines to work on during the ses- sions. Max enrollment is 12. INSTRUCTOR: Marilyn H. The use of personal computers has become commonplace for virtually every household. This course will ex- plore personal computing basics, an understanding of how things work, where a user can find what is needed, how to stay safe in the interconnect- ed world, and explore answers to the questions users have about comput- ers and computing. Hershel Hartford, who has taught classes on Life in the Digital Age for four years at OLLI, brings to life the discussion in a hu- morous and enjoyable environment. Explore this topic by reading and discussing four works of well-writ- ten fiction and non-fiction by regional authors: Sept. 4: John Grisham (2010) A Painted House, Oct. 2: Charles Portis (1966) Norwood, Nov. 6: John Williams (1965) Stoner, Dec. 4: Phillip Douglas Howerton (Ed.) (2019) The Literature of the Ozarks: An Anthology. Group members are expected to fi nd their own copies of the books and to have read each title before the meeting. INSTRUCTOR: Carol Gaetjens, Facilitator DAY/DATE: Wednesdays, 9/4/19-12/4/19 (4) TIME: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM LOCATION: FPL COST: $19 OLLI Member $34 Non-OLLI Member COMBATING RAPE CULTURE: BUILDING AWARENESS TO SUPPORT SURVIVORS DESCRIPTION: Sexual assault and sexual violence are often in the head- lines of today's news. Though many survivors are speaking out and focus- ing on healing, cultural norms con- tinue to support and perpetuate acts of sexual violence. This class will be an interactive opportunity for each par- ticipant to become more aware of the everyday messages that create a "rape culture" and how to combat those messages. Additionally, the class will offer tools for how to best support survivors of sexual assault. INSTRUCTOR: Anne Shelley, Executive Director of the NWA Center for Sexual Assault DAY/DATE: Wednesday, 9/4/19 (1) TIME: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM LOCATION: OLLI COST: $20 OLLI Member $35 Non-OLLI Member CINCO CHARLAS - FIVE CHATS DESCRIPTION: Cinco Charlas will be a chance to practice your Span- ish conversational skills. Each chat will center around a different theme - yourself, your family, your activities, your likes and dislikes, your future plans. Each student will be paired with a conversation partner at the be- ginning and then partners will switch every ten minutes or so - rather like "speed dating" in Spanish. Michelle Gayon, a retired Spanish teacher, will help to facilitate the conversa- tions and keep the "charlas" going. Although designed as a follow up to "Refresher Spanish", from this Spring's semester, the course should be great practice for anyone wanting to brush up on language skills. Suggested vo- cabulary sheets will be provided for each "charla".
