Girl Scouts Madison Smith (front seat), Kharma Beck, & Karen
Smith said their flight with the Young Eagles Program was great.
First, the EAA Members spoke with the girls about the history of
aviation. They explained the basic principles of flight and shared
their love of aviation and their pilot experiences. Then the girls
were paired with experienced pilots who took them up for a short
flight. Older kids are given the opportunity to take the controls for
a bit at the discretion of their instructor.

is all about
FLIGHT
What is it like to fly in a small plane
and look down at your hometown?
Some kids in Northwest Arkansas have
discovered that thrill through the Young
Eagles
®
flight introduction program.
Launched in 1992, the Young Eagles
®
program has dedicated more than 25
years to giving youth ages 8–17 the
experience of a lifetime. Hosted by the
members of the Experimental Aircraft
Association (EAA), Young Eagles events
introduce kids like you to flying and
maybe even a career in aviation. Kids
learn the basics of flight then get a free
airplane ride in a small plane. Pilots
volunteer their time and aircraft for the
events.
The Northwest Arkansas chapter
of the EAA has provided more than
3,000 flights for local kids through the Young
Eagles
®
program.
After a child's Young Eagles
®
flight, he or she will
get a free EAA membership, access to an online
flight course and, at age 13, a flight lesson. At age 16,
the child is eligible for a student pilot certificate and
can begin flying solo, making it possible to log hours
while still in high school.
Besides being a pilot, there are many other jobs in
aviation: accident investigators, air traffic controllers,
planners, designers and more!
