May 15, 2019 www.DesertMessenger.com 17 DO YOU HAVE EXPIRED OR UNUSED MEDICATIONS? DUMP THE DRUGS at QPD! Dispose safely at QUARTZSITE POLICE DEPT. Mon - Fri. 8am-5pm 305 N. Plymouth, Quartzsite 928-927-4644 Space donated by Desert Messenger Nancy's Kitchen The Quartzsite Police Department (QPD) hosted the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics on Wednesday, May 2nd, 2019. This was QPD's sixth offi cial run through the Town of Quartzsite. QPD offi cers were still processing the shooting and arson scenes during the night, so community members stepped up in support. Wednesday, May Runners, walkers and bicyclers left the Fire Station around 7:15am. The Torch was escorted east on Tyson, south on Plymouth, ending up at the VFW Post 769 who hosted a breakfast for the runners. The Torch was escorted to the next leg where it was handed off to Maricopa County Sheriff's Offi cers. The Torch Run program began in 1981, when Wich- ita, Kansas Chief of Police Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent need to raise funds for and increase awareness of Special Olympics. The idea was simple: provide lo- cal law enforcement with opportunities to volunteer with Special Olympics in communities where the of- fi cers lived and worked. The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Spe- cial Olympics is an international series of torch re- lays, sports-based awareness events, and fundraisers run by law enforcement offi cers. Events support ath- letes leading up to each state's or nation's Summer Games. Law enforcement offi cers raise money in conjunction with respective torch runs for their local Special Olympics programs. Throughout the course of the Torch Run, partici- pants collect contributions from individuals and businesses, asking to help raise support for incred- ible Special Olympics athletes. The Torch Run is much more than just a run; it is a year-round campaign to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics Arizona. FRIED RICE 3 cups cooked white rice 3 tbs sesame oil 1 cup frozen peas and carrots (thawed) 1 small onion, chopped 1tsp minced garlic 2 eggs, slightly beaten 1/4 cup soy sauce On medium high heat, heat the oil in a large skillet or wok. Add the peas carrots mix, onion and garlic. Stir fry until tender. Lower the heat to medium low and push the mixture off to one side, then pour your eggs on the other side of skillet and stir fry until scrambled. Now add the rice and soy sauce and blend all together well. Stir fry until thoroughly heated. Try adding some green onion. ADD SHRIMP OR CHICKEN FOR COMPLETE MEAL! Special Olympics Torch Run in Quartzsite QPD's motto, "Our Community, Our Commitment" has driven the department to be actively involved in more community events of great importance such as the Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run. QPD is raising money in several ways to help contrib- ute to this special and important program year-round. In the past the department and sponsors have contribut- ed a minimal amount. This year is more special as QPD wants to be listed on the shirt next year. 100% of all money raised for the Law Enforcement Torch Run goes directly to support Special Olympics athletes in Arizona and their supporting programs. 95% of all money that is given to Special Olympics Arizona goes directly to support Special Olympics pro- grams and athletes. For more information contact the QPD at 928-927-4646.
