Fort Bragg has the world's second largest population of red- cockaded woodpeckers, which are an endangered species, and the post has worked successfully to protect the birds' habitat on its property. Meanwhile, the team's red and black colors match not just those of the woodpecker but of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, which is headquartered at Fort Bragg. e hope with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers is that they thrive in their new home and in turn help boost downtown and the city and county overall. At the start of May, there were 61 more regular-season home games to go this year (and 52 more regular- season away games). ere will also be other events at the stadium, including the Big South college baseball championship that will be held there May 21-25. e Big South includes the Campbell University Camels. e excitement is there. Now it's time to play ball.
