Discove r Cit yV iewN C.co m's fre s h up d ate d loo k ! | 57 One woman completed the elite obstacle course and thus won it. Her husband narrowly topped the men's category. Military families were able to compete for free in the competitions while non-military competitors had to pay a small fee. Sponsors provided the biggest financial boost and the foundation raised $200,000 in all. e money will be used for programs at the park and for improvements to its infrastructure. e weekend's events drew an estimated 1,500 people – another Rick's Place record. Foundation personnel said they were thrilled with the results. Rick's Place and the Rick Herrema Foundation are named for a Special Operations Command soldier who was killed in Baghdad in 2006 during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Twenty- seven-year-old Rick Herrema, promoted posthumously to sergeant first-class, wasn't able to fulfill his dream of one day marrying and having children. But his friendly personality and generous spirit made such an impact on others that the park was created in his name. Its ultimate aim is to support military families and help them relieve stress and reconnect, especially aer deployments. e foundation says Rick's Place provides "evidence-based, fun group activities that promote familial cohesion, reduce stress, improve quality of life, and offer tailored social support." It says its activities – including such things as gardening, family obstacle courses and interactive fun with animals – help soldiers reintegrate aer deployments. And if along the way, someone conquers an obstacle – or even the whole course – or manages 160 pushups – or 5 – or if they fall into muddy water while trying, it's all good, especially at Rick's Place. *Wine Tasting ...
