No matter. ey laughed and were cheered by onlookers impressed by their feats and by their gumption at tackling the obstacle course challenge at Rick's Place, a park for military families in west Fayetteville. Rick's Place, a peaceful 50-acre former horse farm, aims to give military families a place to relax and reconnect. Its offerings include special events, walking trails, fishing, gardens and playgrounds. ere are ziplines and a permanent obstacle course in place. But the obstacle courses set up at the park on the first weekend of April were very different from the usual fare. Obstacles were stationed throughout a long and sturdy metal framework that soared 100 feet in the air and over water and mud. e setup looked familiar to any fan of the American Ninja Warrior TV show. And with good reason. It was designed by Darren Jeffrey, an executive with the company that produces the show and a member of the nonprofit Rick Herrema Foundation, which owns and operates Rick's Place. e course was set up for a special competition to raise funds for the foundation, which continues to develop the park and to hold special events there. Participants could choose from an intermediate-level course or an elite-level course. ere was also a kids' obstacle course and a skills challenge with prizes for age-group winners who could do the most pushups and pullups or the highest vertical jump or do the longest nunchuck hang. One participant – a man – managed 160 pushups. Not surprisingly, he won the prize for his age group at that skill – and set a Rick's Place record. e winner of the pushup competition in the under-6 age group should also have been proud – he did 5.
