POOL PARTIES REUNIONS The Special Event Production Company Military-related events in May – and beyond M ay is Military Appreciation Month, which is fitting given the number of military-oriented observances that occur in May. Chief among them is Memorial Day, the last Monday of May, which is for remembering and honoring the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Also in May: Military Spouse Appreciation Day, observed on the second Friday of the month (May 10 this year), and Armed Forces Day, observed on the third Saturday of the month (May 18 this year). May 8 marks the anniversary of V-E Day – Victory in Europe Day. In this community, there are always a number of local events in May and through the summer that are for and about the military. Below are a few: Global War on Terror Memorial Wall, on display at the Airborne & Special Operations Museum, May 2-29 is traveling memorial honors the nearly 7,000 service members killed in the Global War on Terror as well as their families. e dog tags of those service members were used to create the wall, which is shaped like an American flag when it's draped on a casket. ere are also 50 gold stars on the memorial to honor all Gold Star families nationwide. The 12th Annual Field of Honor, on display on the parade ground of the Airborne & Special Operations Museum, May 18 - June 22 Each of the 800 American flags that will fly on the field will display the name of its sponsor and the veteran or current service member that it honors. Always a stirring sight, the field is hosted by the museum in collaboration with the Cool Spring Downtown District. For information, check facebook. com/asomf. All American Week, Fort Bragg, May 20-23 is annual celebration by the 82nd Airborne Division features events like the Division Run, a memorial to troops fallen in the past year, a parachute jump, a chance to leap off the 34-foot paratrooper training tower (while safely attached to a zipline), and more for soldiers, veterans, families and civilians. July 4th Celebration, Main Post Parade Field at Fort Bragg, July 4 Independence Day is definitely worth a celebration and Fort Bragg always puts on a great party. Activities include a performance by a parachute demonstration team, a patriotic flag ceremony, fireworks and food and beverages. And, oh yes, a big concert. is year's headliner is internationally known rock band 3 Doors Down, which has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. e opening act is e Fih, a hard rock band based in Fayetteville. Gates open at 1 p.m. e fireworks that will close out the day will happen at 10 p.m. e event is free and open to the public. For information, check facebook. com/fortbraggmwr.
