e museum was always intended to have an
immersive effect on its visitors. In part of the World
War II section, visitors walk through a narrow alley,
brick pavers under their feet and stone walls that
appear bullet-riddled on either side, giving the feel
of war-torn France.
Elsewhere, they can lean into the fuselage of a
World War II-era plane set up for paratroopers.
At the far end is a life-size photo from that time of
paratroopers getting ready to jump. Mileshko said
an update to that exhibit might have a video where
the photo is now so visitors can get an even better
idea of what it was like.
Most of the exhibit space is devoted to World
War II and, to a lesser degree, Korea and Vietnam.
at was a natural choice when the museum
was first built since those were then the biggest
conflicts in the history of U.S. airborne and special
operations units.
Organizers hope the first phase of the
major updates to ASOM will be complete
by the museum's 20th anniversary in
August of next year. The target date for
the completion of the second and final
phase is 2022. So far, nearly $3 million has
been pledged, according to Liz Mileshko,
the foundation's executive director.
