Early on, displays were tweaked to carve out space for exhibits about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. But much of the museum has remained largely the same since 2000. Next year, that will start to change. e nonprofit ASOM Foundation is in the midst of an $8.5 million fund-raising campaign to pay for major updates at the 59,000-square- foot museum. Among the plans: substantially increasing display space to tell the story of the continuing Global War on Terror and integrating more digital technology into displays throughout the museum. Organizers hope the first phase of the project will be complete by the museum's 20th anniversary in August of next year. e target date for the completion of the second and final phase is 2022. So far, nearly $3 million has been pledged, according to Liz Mileshko, the foundation's executive director. Built with nearly $23 million from public and private sources, the museum is devoted to preserving and relating the history of the U.S. Army's airborne and special operations soldiers. It is part of the U.S. Army Museum System, which is responsible for the facility's operation and maintenance. e foundation handles other costs, including marketing and major improvements of exhibits and the outside grounds.
