Living the High Life BY JENNIFER HEEBNER On the fringe of affl uent Scottsdale, Ariz., lies a lesser-known but equally posh community dubbed Carefree. It's sparsely populated, with just under 5,000 residents, who are largely wealthy and looking for likeminded neighbors. Just how kindred are these folks? Median household income hovers at six fi gures. Carefree is where Shelly Spence, owner of the Grace Renee Gallery and an 18-year publisher of Images magazine—with a monthly circulation of 67,000 luxury tomes that mail to the four wealthiest ZIP codes in Maricopa County—opened her shop at the end of 2018. Spence's reasoning for the store was to better serve the magazine business; she needed an event space. "I needed to do events to attract bigger clients," she explains. "I wanted to embrace the arts and this culturally rich community by using this space to connect readers with [magazine] clients." Charitable events are strong draws for both clients and customers. Spence has held events to raise money for the Arizona Musicfest and Violins of Hope, among other local benefi ciaries. A charming outdoor space sets a festive tone for events at the Grace Renee Gallery in Carefree, Ariz. Shelly Spence is owner of the recently opened Grace Renee Gallery and an 18-year publisher of Images magazine for the Phoenix- Scottsdale, Ariz., area.
