T he Alpha Nu Chapter of Beta eta Pi at the University of Kansas had a strong start to 2019 with the initi- ation of 25 new members. One of our main focuses for the semester has been participation in the larg- est philanthropy event at KU, Rock Chalk Revue in early February. Over 40 of our members participated, had a very entertaining and successful show, and assisted in raising over $80,000 toward the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence. Our main philanthropy event outside of Rock Chalk Revue is our Tom- Strong 5k run. e run is this April. We have set goals of $10,000 in donations and 500 par- ticipants. It began three years ago aer an Al- pha Nu brother, Tom Babb '19, was paralyzed on a family trip over winter break his freshman year, and we hope to keep the tradition alive years into the future. Speaking on this year's race, Tom highlighted his confidence that the event "will have a strong turnout" because of the enormous support developed for his cause in his four years at the university. Although many snow days have kept us out of the classroom early in the semester, we expect to improve on last semester's 3.44 overall chap- ter GPA. As always, we aim for first place this semester and have implemented a new schol- arship committee focused on those in need of traditional assistance. Scholarship Chairman John Lierz '21 noted that "the new program will ensure that each brother is held account- able for his study habits." In addition to those leading within the chapter, the University's Student Body president, Noah Ries '19, has been making some very impactful changes on campus. As for recruitment, we are right on track in terms of identifying mem- bers of PC'23. We have strong can- didates from all over the country. Recruitment Chairman Gregory Wiedeman '20 noted how "it's ex- tremely important to attract men both locally and from different ar- eas across the country to ensure the pledge class has a diverse mindset." Overall, this semester for Alpha Nu has had an incredible start and it's hard to believe it's near- ing its end. Every member is putting in the ef- fort to have a successful midterm season, and Spring Break was a nice reward for all the hard work. We will do this by sticking to our seven cherished values: cultivation of the intellect, accountability, pledge class bond, time man- agement, respect of the house, acting as gen- tleman, and soundness of the body and mind. When all seven of these values are represented by our brothers both on and off campus on a daily basis, it makes an impact not only on our success but also on those we have the opportu- nity to influence.
