Sengpiehl '59 In memory of Gerald M. Simmons '59 F or as long as fraternities have existed at the University of Kansas, Greek alumni have helped mentor and protect the students that live, study, and conduct fraternity business within their chapter houses. Only in recent years have individual housing corporations banded together to promote fraternity interests. To help ensure the continued success of fraternities at KU, the Kansas Fraternity Landlords' League (KFLL) was created to protect the $36 million in Greek real estate between 11 different chapter houses at KU. e league represents 1,000 students and 14,000 living alumni and is led by KFLL President and Kappa Sigma alumni adviser David Steen. Since its founding in 2015, the league has shared information, enforced high academic standards for its members, and established policies to sustain and improve KU Greek life. KFLL boasts that its members have slightly higher GPAs than non-fraternity men, and university data also show that they are more likely to graduate in four years. Yet at a time when the behavior of fraternity men is under more scrutiny than ever and Greek reform is a hot-button topic for universities, KFLL members say their mission isn't to cover up improprieties. Instead, KFLL members see themselves as a shield for their fraternity, their chapter houses, and the interests of their fellow alumni. Additional organizations have also been founded to help combat growing issues facing Greek organizations. One of which is a new university task force that hopes to improve KU fraternities and sororities aer a freeze was placed on social activities in the spring 2018 semester. e 27-member group, chaired by KU and Alpha Nu alumnus Mike Michaelis '68, is expected to submit its recommendations to the chancellor by summer 2019. Although KFLL was not invited as an organization to join the new task force, alumni representing their collective interests will be participating in the meetings. For more information about KFLL, please reach out to our Alpha Nu director David Burkhead '92.
