14 Outdoor Recreation The Sacramento River The Sacramento River in Tehama County is in pristine condition and provides public access to fisherman and pleasure boaters just minutes from Interstate 5. The river is split into two sections — the north county to the Red Bluff Diversion Dam, and the area south of the diversion dam. Both sections of the river are good for canoes, kayaks, dories, rafts, and shallow draft power boats. Fishing The opportunity to catch sportfish is year- round, but the best angling is in the spring and fall. The spring season begins the last day of April with the opening of upland trout season in the streams throughout Tehama County. The best time for shad in the Sacramento River is May and June. The fall salmon run is the largest from October through November. Throughout the year small mouth and black bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish and sturgeon can be found.
