Outdoor Recreation 23 The Sacramento River Bend area The Bend area, about seven miles north of Red Bluff, contains the wildest stretch of the Sacramento River south of Redding. The history of Tehama County is filled with tales of battles with American Indians, hog herds and with vernal pools and wetlands frequented by water fowl. The public land is just a few Pack it in, pack it out children riding flumes built to transport lumber from Manton to Red Bluff. Efforts are under way in Congress to turn the 17,000 acres of public land into a National Recreation Area. The land includes 15 miles of river frontage miles north of Red Bluff. Most of the land can be reached by road, while some areas are only accessible from the river. Trails, originally cut by horseback riders and now maintained by the BLM, cross the landscape and give hikers multiple views of the Sacramento River. Maps are available online at www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/f o/redding.html.
