WHY I STRIVE
FOR EXCELLENCE
JOEL HONIG
CERTIFIED HIGHER EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL (CHEP) IN TEACHING
EDUCATION MANAGER – UNIVERSAL TECHNICAL INSTITUTE (NORWOOD, MA)
How many years of experience do you
have in higher education?
ree years.
How did you begin your career in higher
education?
I had been an automotive field technician for over thirty years
and wanted to share my knowledge with the next generation
of automotive and diesel technicians. I also facilitated a
leadership program in the state prison system. Having the
technical skill was one thing but experiencing being in front
of the room in the leadership program gave me the confidence
I needed to do what I knew I would love. I applied for the
position of technical instructor at my institution and was
fortunate enough to land the job. ree years down the road
and I am still loving teaching.
What part of your job brings you the
most personal satisfaction?
My greatest joy comes from watching students get excited
when they learn a new skill set. Sometimes they struggle with
a concept, but when the light bulb turns on—the moment
they get it—it's pure magic. e process of figuring out what
learning style is best for each individual student is also a
challenge that I love. ere is no one-size-fits-all answer to
fulfill the needs of every student, and when I discover what
works for a student who has struggled in the past I feel a great
sense of accomplishment.
