How did you begin your career in higher education? I had been an automotive field technician for over thirty years and wanted to share my knowledge with the next generation of automotive and diesel technicians. I also facilitated a leadership program in the state prison system. Having the technical skill was one thing but experiencing being in front of the room in the leadership program gave me the confidence I needed to do what I knew I would love. I applied for the position of technical instructor at my institution and was fortunate enough to land the job. ree years down the road and I am still loving teaching. What part of your job brings you the most personal satisfaction? My greatest joy comes from watching students get excited when they learn a new skill set. Sometimes they struggle with a concept, but when the light bulb turns on—the moment they get it—it's pure magic. e process of figuring out what learning style is best for each individual student is also a challenge that I love. ere is no one-size-fits-all answer to fulfill the needs of every student, and when I discover what works for a student who has struggled in the past I feel a great sense of accomplishment.
