Star Wars movie came out that year! So long ago. That's 43 years ago. A gallon of gas cost 62 cents, a dozen eggs cost 82 cents and yes, there WAS a 13 cent stamp. Things today cost more than four times what they did in 1977. That means if you were paying $5 for something in 1977 that today it would cost $20. But wait! Quartzsite Improvement Association (QIA) dues were $5 a person in 1977. And today?? They're still $5. So it looks like the QIA is trying to provide 1977 services -and more- on 1977 dues, with 2019 costs. In the 1977 by-laws of the QIA, the dues were doubled (Oh, Horrors!) from $2.50 to $5.00. And that's what the dues are today, 43 years later. Is there something wrong with this picture? The QIA board and Mem- bership recently voted to double (Horrors! Not twice in 43 years!) the dues to $10.00 per person for next year. Remember, this is the fi rst raise in dues in 43 years. Go out a buy a gallon of gas and offer them 62 cents! So go ahead, ask, what do I get for my $10? Have you looked at the QIA calendar lately? Some days there are 5-7 things happening at the QIA. It's impossible to list them all here but most of them wouldn't happen without the QIA. Now there must be something you'd like to do...you are breathing aren't you? Retirement doesn't have to mean waiting for the hearse. (I don't think Quartzsite has one.) Let's try alphabetizing and categorizing just some pf the QIA offerings: A= there's weekly AA meetings B=Bingo, sure there's other bingo in town but this may be the largest jackpot and they donate to so many charities. C=Craft classes, every kind of craft (if they don't have it, ask to start it!) jewelry, beading, painting etc. D= Dancing, line dancing and square dancing classes and dances. Plus ball-room dances with live bands. D= Dinners, lunches at many events, hundreds served each week. Con- cession stands at most events. E= Exercise classes fi ve days a week G= Gems, rocks and minerals and what and how to work with them J= music Jams every Thursday, everybody welcome P= Pickle ball, the newest rage for fun, games and exercise P= Pow- Wow, the biggest and best; don't miss it S= Singles, they fi ll the dining room and then trot off on fi eld trips S= Spanish classes I and II V= Volunteering, yes, you ARE alive and you DO have something to give as well as get. Above and beyond activities the QIA does a lot for the town. Do you like to watch TV? The QIA brought it to town and volunteers climbed up the mountain to install the fi rst transmitter. Fire department, ambulance, medical center, the QIA has backed them all. Today they give to many charitable organizations. And they help the Roadrunners Gem and Min- eral Club provide scholarships for Quartzsite high school seniors. (Read the series of articles on scholarships in the Desert Messenger.) The QIA's mission then and now is "to work for the betterment, advance- ment, and beatifi cation of the town of Quartzsite." Wouldn't you like to help? Not only is the $10 membership needed but you could volunteer and do some real good for others. "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for it."
