13 industry. During his nearly 60 years of almond growing, for instance, the almond harvesting process has undergone a large transformation — from hand polling in the summer heat to using automated shakers with AC units and radio. As a result of this automation, the time spent sweeping and hauling almonds has been reduced from days to hours. Similarly, flood and furrow irrigation systems transitioned to drip and micro- misters, an improved technology that sharply reduced water use. With advancements came industry growth — and the associated challenges. For instance, Thoming believes that with the surging number of orchards has come greater challenges related to disease and pest populations. "The Almond Board is doing a lot of research in these areas, and companies are developing new products to overcome resistance," Thoming said. "The industry is gaining on it." The biggest challenge, in Thoming's mind, is the rise in government regulations and staying ahead of new rules — in his office sits a 4-inch-thick binder filled with required reports and documents for his operation's water use. Still, Thoming strongly believes California's almond industry is advancing toward a future of continuous improvement, creating more demand even as it plants more trees. And he plans to remain a part of that journey. "I'll stay involved in the almond industry until I can't anymore," said Thoming. "I love every day of it." John Thoming, the Almond Achievement Award winner, is recognized at The 2018 Almond Conference. "Once you're inside [the organization], you can see what the Almond Board's accomplishments have been, especially in helping grow the export market." – John Thoming
