INSIDE: Consul Looks Back on Success 2 Welcome to the Brotherhood 3 Standard Bearer The Spring 2019 Eta Chapter of Sigma Chi at the University of Mississippi REVIVED COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM ENTERS FOURTH YEAR Who Aren't We Reaching? W e hope you have enjoyed receiving this newsletter and keeping up (or catching up) with your fellow alumni and finding out what is going on at Eta Chapter. Please make sure the brothers you see on a regular basis are getting this newsletter. If they are not, please encourage them to reach out to me via email at dougrboone@gmail. com and I'll make sure that they get on our mailing list. Both mailing and email addresses would be helpful as we continue our mailed communications and work to expand to email updates as well. WE HEAR YOU As part of the board's assessment for future goals, Eta surveyed several brothers on their feelings of the chapter and their experience as alumni. One thing we heard loud and clear is that you would like more opportunities to get together with your brothers regularly. We also understand that you want these events specifically tailored to alumni. We had a great alumni-only steak dinner last semester and are looking for more chances to bring our brothers together as desired. Please share any additional feedback with the enclosed contact form—there is a survey section to help us build up this area of our programming. FUTURE EVENTS Earlier this spring we sent an email sharing details for an Ole Miss baseball weekend April 5-7. We also promoted it on our social media platforms. Didn't get the email? Please use the enclosed contact form to update your preferred email address and we'll add you for next time. If anyone is interested in helping us as a "social chair" for future events we would be more than happy to accept the assistance. We're also happy to help connect you with brothers from your own classes if you're looking to host a reunion of your own. Filling out the contact form to keep your information current will help us keep everyone connected. As always, if there is anything that I can do to answer questions or address concerns you can reach me at the email below. In hoc, Doug Boone '85 dougrboone@gmail.com President, Mississippi Sigma Chi Association "Always a Rebel" William Yates III Found a Home in Sigma Chi A s a legacy, William G. Yates III '94 always knew he wanted to attend Ole Miss. "I never looked anywhere else," he says. "As far back as I can remember, I was always a Rebel." And while his father, Significant Sig Bill Yates Jr. '63, did have somewhat of an influence on William's interest in fraternity life, he wanted William to make his own choice. William visited several chapters during recruitment but says Eta Chapter was "the place I felt most comfortable and at home. The brothers were great people—serious when appropriate but also liked to have a good time." William felt he could reach his full potential as a Sigma Chi member. While earning a degree in business administration, William says, "The day-to-day activity of hanging out and spending time with my brothers was the highlight of those four years." And with the support system of Sigma Chi, William certainly did achieve an outstanding undergraduate career. "Being around excellence, in a group of ambitious, like-minded men, prepares you for life after college. You have to think about your personal growth and identify objectives and goals." William was model pledge his freshman year, served the chapter as annotator, and was on the ASB presidential cabinet. Also a Mortar Board member, he was a Taylor Medalist and graduated summa cum laude. "Sigma Chi was a good balance for me. I had a good time but we also knew how to focus and be serious when necessary." (Continued on page 2)
