A
s I write this during the teeth of winter, it's hard to believe that
spring is right around the corner. One of my favorite memories of
my time at the Beta House was that first warm spring day each year.
We'd break out the shorts and t-shirts and hang out on the front steps of the
Main House. e warmth would feel so good aer the cold winter, and our
spirits rose knowing that warm weather and the end of the semester were
upon us. Boston winters can be cold and dark and, at MIT, filled with hard
work. e onset of spring provided the first break and reminded us that
summer was coming.
We've gone through a similar cycle with the re-establishment of our Beta
Chapter at MIT. From the days when we made the difficult decision to
temporarily shutter Beta Upsilon in June 2011 to when we reopened in
September 2012, we went through the darkest times. As the Chapter re-
established itself, things got a little brighter. We began to build our numbers
and have averaged 14 new members each of the past two years, at the high
end of our past recruitment results. en, when I learned that the Chapter
had applied to receive its charter back from the General Convention this
August in Oxford, Ohio, it felt like that first warm spring day all over again.
I couldn't be prouder of the progress the men have made at Beta Upsilon.
I am optimistic that the Convention delegates will agree to reinstate Beta
Upsilon from our current colony status and I am urging alumni to attend
Convention on August 1-4, 2019, to support the Chapter and, hopefully,
join in the celebration. You can register for Convention at www.beta.org.
Even if you don't attend the full Convention, please consider coming to
Oxford, Ohio, on August 3 to show your support.
