Winter • 2019 sigepiadelta.weebly.com Kevin was one of two Americans repre- senting team USA at the tournament. e other countries competing were India, Finland, Russia, Germany, and China. Kevin competed in the light heavy-weight (95 kg) division. He went 2-0 in both fights with a technical knockout in each fight, including the championship. Some of his favorite memories from com- peting were seeing India and experiencing the culture. He visited landmarks includ- ing the Victorian Memorial, the Mother eresa Museum, and Hindu Temples. He also enjoyed interacting with the interna- tional community. He said he met many friends from around the world that he wants visit and stay connected with. Kevin Vaughan- Carber '19 (Continued from page 1) Last year, SigEp won the Drake University Volt- mer award for fraternity intramurals. is award goes to the fraternity that accumulates the most points in intramurals in one school year. e points are earned by entering teams into different sports and then more points are earned for first or second place. SigEp won by 200 points over the fraternity in second place. SigEp placed first or second in almost every sport and had at least one team in each. In indoor flag football, SigEp placed both first and second. e chapter holds this award very highly and it means a lot to not only those who played each sport, but also to those who supported the teams. It is a great show of chapter unity, especially the friendly compe- tition between the A and B teams when SigEp fields multiple teams in one sport. Iowa Delta Wins 2018 Voltmer Joe Mitchell '19 Elected for Iowa House District 84 In June 2018, brother Joe Mitchell '19 won the primary election for a seat with the Iowa House of Representatives. Joe, originally from Wayland in Southeast Iowa, campaigned in his hometown district 84. "SigEp has greatly impacted my life and my decision to run for this position. e leadership skills I learned through being a part of the Iowa Delta Chapter have given me confidence through my campaign and have helped me at the Capitol." Joe has worked at the Capitol since his senior year in high school as a page, clerk, and a lobbyist. He was appointed to this seat as the youngest person ever to be a member of the Iowa House of Representatives. Congratulations, Joe! After Outgoing Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) President Gary Ordway '64 was recognized at the sum- mer 2017 National Fraternity Conclave, the AVC decided to reward him for a lifetime of commitment to SigEp. Tyler Boggess '10 transitioned into the role of AVC President, which allowed Gary to take a small step back to enjoy the progress the Chapter built on his exceptional vision. Follow- ing Gary's progressive ideals of what our Chapter should look like has led to over 15 years of impressive success. From a collection of Buchanan Cups, to a myriad of awards earned at the regional Carlson Leadership Academies, to plentiful awards won at the local campus level, the SigEp trophy room is filled with awards high- lighting the Chapter's accomplishments. Trophy Room Dedicated to Gary Ordway e trophy room was recently improved to recognize the outstanding dedication of alumni who have gone above and beyond to support the local Chapter. e wall includes alumni who donated time and resources to help the Chapter succeed to the degree that it has thus far. e trophy room has always been a location in the house that has given Gary a tremendous amount of pride, as it is a symbol of the successful vision he deployed to rebuild the Chapter in 2001. When the rest of the AVC and undergraduate executive committee learned that Gary was planning to transition out of his role as AVC President, they knew that he had earned a recognition that would demonstrate the lasting impact he has made on the Chapter. As such, the trophy room was dedicated in his honor and is now known as the "Gary Ordway Trophy Room." e awards and pride from undergradu- ates and alumni demonstrate the exceptional and progressive vision that Ordway had to lead the Chapter to immense heights. If the Chapter can continue to pursue Ordway's vision in the future, it is assured that the Gary Ordway Trophy Room will continue to be filled with even more impres- sive accomplishment.
