The event will include races for dirt bikes, UTV's, ATV's, big bikes and pee wees. The race track, formerly known as Blythe Raceway, was established by Shorty Winkler in 1979 as a motocross track. Originally, Shorty pur- chased the 113 acres of bare desert land in 1975 when his son, Russell, starting riding and didn't want him ripping it up on canal banks and other unsafe areas. As this Grand Prix style track grew popular to towns- folk and surrounding areas, Shorty and close friends, like Bucky Schri- ner, added necessities such as electricity, a starting line, gates, a tower, and a PA system. During the mid 1980's, Shorty hosted several NMA Qualifi ers, the Kyle Flemming Memorial, Motorcross races, as well as the riding styles of Ronnie Lechien, Kyle Lewis, Jimmy Buttons, Chappy Blose, Dirks Bros, and many others. As time passed and the racing subsided, Shorty and wife, Wilma, moved to Pismo Beach. Eventually, the land was sold. Shorty passed in 2003. After changing hands through sales and remaining dormant for over 15 years, long time family friend and Blythe native, Bobby Tracy, purchased the property. The track is in the process of re-opening as a memorial to Shorty, adding value to the town, and supporting local businesses. A welcoming place to all that hold a special spot in their hearts for off road motorsports.
