Receiving the annual flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting yourself and family members from the influenza virus. T he Cumberland County Department of Public Health is giving away free short-term radon test kits to Cumberland County residents, while supplies last. e kits allow citizens to test for radon gas and provide information on how to lower radon levels within a home. Pick up a kit Public Health Center 1235 Ramsey St. Weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Radon is an odorless, colorless radioactive gas caused by the decay of naturally-occurring radium in the earth. Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Radon map applications are available at the N.C. Radon Program's website ncradon.org. e map application provides information about the number of tests that have been conducted within a zip code, as well as the highest radon level recorded in that zip code. e application also provides a list of certified professionals who can assist in testing or fixing radon issues in tested homes that return readings above a safe level.
