M 19, 2010  WOMEN CON’T FROM PAGE 10 had a crude cross. No trees, not a fl ower, not even a blade of grass. She slowly walked among the graves. Beside some of the graves were large holes. Jack told her that the holes were where the coyotes came in at night. They walked in silence back to their quarters. Now she understood why Jack had tried to dissuade her from coming. The uneasy spirits from the desecrated graves began to haunt her at night. She dreamed that some had no heads and others were without arms. But they all nodded or pointed to the gruesome burying-ground, softly calling to Martha, “You will be with us soon.” At the end of Jack’s tour in Ehrenberg, Martha wanted to visit her family in Nantucket before she rejoined Jack at his next post. After another trip back down the Colorado River, Martha boarded the steamship for San Francisco, once again on the Newbern. Both she and little Harry were seasick the entire 16 days it took to get to San Francisco. Their stay in Ehrenberg was at its end. As she stood on the deck, tears rolled down her cheeks. “I will miss this place,” she whispered to herself. From San Francisco she and Harry boarded a Pullman car for the cross-country train ride to her family in Nantucket. She enjoyed seeing her family and friends but at the end of eight months she was excited to learn that Jack had been promoted to fi rst lieutenant and he would be detached to Fort McDowell in Arizona Territory. Soon Martha and little Harry were on their way to be reunited with Jack. From the lovely homes and beautiful gardens of Nantucket to primitive living conditions, the monotony of the heat, the drills of the uniformed captains, and most of all to her handsome First Lieutenant, Martha felt the call. Their postings in Arizona provided Jack and Martha with hours of stories to pass on to their totally aghast society friends and family. After Jack’s retirement the Summerhayeses returned to Arizona where Martha put the fi nishing touches on her wonderful book about their experiences. Do you suppose Martha thought of herself as one of La Paz County’s fi rst snowbirds? (The next story will be: “George Hutson’s Mesquite-Bean Patch.”) Tips to protect your identity during the 2010 census (ARA) - If you haven’t already mailed in your 2010 U.S. Census form, you should expect a visit from a census taker very soon. The law mandates that everyone complete and return the forms, but you should know some things about protecting your identity during census time. It’s important to know that fi lling out the forms sent by the U.S. Cen- sus Bureau is safe -- but you need to be aware of potential scams, such as people posing as census takers and e- mails claiming to be from the Census Bureau. In an effort to make sure that all Americans participate, the Census Bureau employs teams of workers to knock on doors starting April 1. What you need to look out for are people posing as offi cial workers in an at- tempt to defraud people who answer their questions. Census workers will ask the same questions that are on the census forms that you receive in the mail, in- cluding things like your name, phone number, address and so on, but they will not ask for your full Social Securi- ty number, nor will they ask for money or donations. Anyone who asks you for information not requested on the Cen- sus form, like passwords or your full Social Security number, might be at- tempting to commit identity theft. You can ask a census worker to provide a valid Census Bureau identifi cation. Another increasingly popular scam is “phishing.” This is a criminal activity that tries, via electronic communica- tion, to get computer users to disclose their personal information, which could be used for fraudulent purpos- es. It is typically done via e-mail and might re-direct you to a legitimate ap- pearing Web site that will ask for sen- sitive information. If you see something in your e-mail in- box that purports to be from the cen- sus, avoid it. Don’t click any links, open any attachments or reply with any in- formation. The U.S. Census Bureau does not conduct the census through the Internet or e-mail, nor does it  SEE CENCUS PAGE 13 • Sunday: Christian Education 9am Worship 10:30am Evening Worship 7pm • Wednesday: Bible Study 7pm Women’s Bible Study - 10am Church • Thursday: • Friday: 12 Steps to Freedom 7pm Discipleship Class 10 am Grow in your relationship with God Fire Station D M P 11 Changing Hearts...Changing Lives Through Worshipping God & Serving Others NOW SERVING BREAKFAST!
