Box 781472 Indianapolis, IN 46278 return service requested S S T h e T h e & & HIELD WORD Merritt Morris Jaggar '53 of Zionsville, Ind., entered the Chapter Grand at age 87 on October 24 with his wife, Joanna, at his side. Born in Indianapolis on November 12, 1930, Merritt attended Broadripple High School where he played on the 1949 city champion- ship baseball team. He was a 1953 graduate of Butler University and an avid Bulldogs fan. Merritt proudly served in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, GA. from 1953 to '55. He was the 1960 winner of the Michael Buchanan Fairbanks award as competitor of the year for the Indiana Chapter of the National Sports Car Club of America. He married Joanna Hoover Cloe in 1984. He served on the board of the Indiana Chapter of the National Kidney Foundation and on the board of the Kensington Woods Townhouse Association at Fairfield Glade, Tenn. Merritt spent 28 years working with labor affairs at Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. He and Joanna spent their retirement years traveling and playing golf. He enjoyed singing barbershop har- mony with Circle City Sound of Indianapolis and was a member of the choir at Carmel United Methodist Church. Lawrence Gregg "Jack" Vannice III '65 entered the Chapter Grand on Janu- ary 13, at age 73. Jack was born March 11, 1944, in Indianapolis, to the late Lawrence Gregg and Mary Louise (King) Vannice. He was a graduate of Danville High School and attended Butler Uni- versity before enlisting in the United States Navy, where he was awarded three Bronze Stars as a Navy SeaBee for his service to our country. At the comple- tion of his tours of duty, Jack enrolled at Indiana University where he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration. Jack was a trusted and respected senior superintendent for FA Wilhelm Construc- tion and Shiel Sexton Co., overseeing many local and tri-state projects. He was a CYO football coach at Immaculate Heart of Mary and with the Bishop Chatard High School football program. As an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Jack was named one of 15 most influential parishioners, served on nu- merous committees, and was an initial recipient of The Spirit of IHM award for his years of dedication to the athletic program. Jack was also a member of the American Legion, American Con- crete Institute, the Carvel Club, and other professional organiza- tions. Joel R. Leaman '63 of Indianapolis, Ind., entered the Chapter Grand on January 25, at age 76. Joel was born on October 21, 1941, in Sullivan, Ind., to the late Thomas Reid Lea- man and Myra Evans Leaman. Joel graduated from Butler University in 1963. He taught at Westfield High School from 1963-1970 and spent the last 40 years at Pike High School, where he served as a guid- ance counselor, English teacher, and coach of the cross country and track teams before retiring in 2010. He was the swim team coach and pool manager at Hillcrest Country Club from 1968-2009, and a coach for Al- lisonville Youth Baseball. Joel was a member of Allisonville Christian Church and the Butler Bulldog Club. Steven D. Roth '74 was born on September 14, 1952, and entered the Chapter Grand on March 24, at age 65. Steven was a resident of Elkhart, Ind., at the time of passing. Steven graduated from Elkhart High School and received a bach- elor's degree from Butler Univer- sity in 1974. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Theodore Arthur "Ted" Schurdell '55 of Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly of Shaker Heights, Ohio, entered the Chapter Grand at age 84 on March 25, 2017, surrounded by his family. Ted was born on March 27, 1933, in Cleve- land, Ohio. He was active with a passion and vitality for life. He graduated from Short- ridge High School of Indianapolis, Ind., where he was a state wrestling champion and attended Butler University. He went on to build a successful advertising agency and career. Ted began his love of tennis, golf, and paddle tennis as a member of Shaker Heights Country Club. An avid sportsman, he also enjoyed scuba diving with his wife and son, as well as fly fishing, fly tying, kay- aking, skiing, woodworking, and pen mak- ing. Above all, Ted was devoted to Karel, his beloved wife of 59 years. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Gary G. Kendrick '73 entered the Chapter Grand with his family by his side on Novem- ber 24, at the age of 67 after a brief illness. Gary will be lovingly remembered by Diane, his wife of 40 years, and his son, Jordan (Em- ily). Gary is survived by his sister, Cheryl Jones (Don); his brothers, Jim and Ric Kend- rick; his aunt, Janice Kendrick; and other ex- tended family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Virginia Kendrick. Born in Highland, Ind., Gary graduated from Butler University in 1973, where he met his wife, Diane. He went on to receive his master's degree in health care administration at Trinity University in 1980. Throughout the years, he managed many hospitals, in- cluding most recently Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital of Nacog- doches, Texas; Daviess Community Hospital of Washington, Ind.; and Lincoln Medical Center of Fayetteville, Tenn. Gary touched many peoples' lives and received many awards throughout his long and prosperous career. Gary supported numerous or- ganizations. He was an active member of the Rotary Club and sat on the board of several orga- nizations, including the Trinity University Healthcare Associa- tion, the Genesis Health Alli- ance and United Way, Economic Development, and Chamber of Commerce in the various cities he lived. Gary was an avid golfer who fulfilled his lifelong dream of attending the Masters Tournament with his son, Jordan. He was also a sports enthusiast who stuck by his Bears, White Sox, and Fighting Irish. He took the time to remember peoples' names because they were important to him. Gary was known for his outgoing personality and his sense of humor, but most importantly, his compassion. Jack Carr Boyd '69 of Noblesville, Ind., en- tered the Chapter Grand at his home surround- ed by family and good friends on December 1, at age 71. Born on December 11, 1946, in Indianapolis, he was the son of the late Guy F. Boyd Jr. and Bette Anne Carr Boyd. Jack graduated from Bishop Chatard High School and Butler University. He was a real estate agent for 45 years and had worked with Century 21 Boyd & Sons, Century 21 Realty Group One, Prudential, and most recently with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services In- diana Realty. Jack was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cicero, Ind. He was owner and operator of Indy Trol- ley, an avid water skier, and wake surfer (some credit him with creating the sport after returning from Hawaii in the 1960s with a nine-foot-long board) on Morse Reservoir where he lived, and Lake Wawasee, Ind. Jack served our country in the United State Air Force Reserves.
