Six years. How did you begin your career in higher education? My career in higher education honestly began completely by chance. While in massage therapy school, I was told by my instructors that I should consider coming back to the school as a lab assistant once I passed my national exam and was licensed—but that thought went to the back of my mind as I entered the field and began to work for myself. I applied for a position as a massage therapy clinic coordinator at my current school as a supplement to my private practice. I didn't get that position but was offered the position of substitute instructor, which I naturally accepted. Almost a year to the day later I had worked my way up the chain to program director, which I have been happily doing for over 5 years now. What part of your job brings you the most personal satisfaction? I enjoy all aspects of my job as an instructor and a program director, but there two parts of the job that bring me the most personal satisfaction. e first is being witness to the light-bulb moments—when the information truly clicks with the student and they just get it. I firmly believe it is called a light-bulb moment because they really do glow! e second moment is when I get the call or visit immediately aer a student passes their national certification exam and I know that I am going to be welcoming them as a colleague into the field!
