EXPLORE YOUR PARKS Your Guide to Marin County Parks & Programs WINTER 2018–2019 Not too long ago, climate change was an abstract dot on the horizon. That's no longer the case. Sea level rise is here. Flooding associated with high tides and storms already impacts Marin County on a recurring basis, and these impacts are expected to increase in frequency and severity. Almost a third of Marin County's parks, preserves, and pathways are located in and around wetlands and shorelines. Together with our partners across the Bay Area, we're working to identify risks and implement adaptations that protect the habitat and infrastructure within our care. Leveraging Measure A funding, over the past five years, Marin County Parks has been awarded $1.09 million in outside grant funding for sea level rise adaptation projects. We are currently working on 4 different sea level rise projects. One of these projects addresses resilience for Bothin Marsh and the adjacent Mill Valley- Sausalito Multiuse Pathway. This 106-acre area of marsh, slough, and tidal wetlands supports many native and rare plants and animals, including the endangered Ridgway's rail. The adjacent pathways provide recreation and commuting opportunities for tens of thousands of people each year. We must act quickly to protect these valuable resources. I encourage every resident to get involved. Visit marincounty.org to learn about sea level rise assessments along the Marin County coasts and baysides. Join a Parks volunteer day to help restore Aramburu Island or Creekside Marsh, and stay tuned for public meetings by subscribing to our enewsletter. Become informed, get involved, and help make the decisions that will be necessary to build resilient communities.
