Mike Kadubek '86 X1268 Thankful for ΛΧΑ Brotherhood Alumnus Gives Back to Chi Zeta Lambda Chi Alpha - University of Illinois - Champaign, Illinois • Fall 2018 Chi Zetagram M ichael "Bucky" Kadubek '86 X1268 credits Lambda Chi Alpha with teaching him to give back, so it was only natural for him to give back to Chi Zeta—both in the house and in the years to come. "Although I didn't hold undergraduate office, I helped out the High Epsilon a lot," Mike recalls. "During my years in the house, there was always something fun or exciting going on. My ΛΧΑ brothers are still the best group of guys one can imagine. I love them all." Mike graduated from the U of I with a bachelor's in finance and spent his whole career working for (and eventually running) the family business. Founded in 1973, the business worked in welding supplies and gas distribution. Mike worked in all aspects, from sales to serving as president after his father's passing in 2000, eventually selling the business and retiring in 2016. He now serves on the Chi Zeta Board of Directors and helped plan the new chapter house dedication following the capital campaign's conclusion. "Chi Zeta gave me so many lifelong friendships, I simply had to give back, both through my donation and my continued service." To this day, Mike enjoys running into ΛΧΑ alumni at Homecoming and hearing their stories. He still has a close group of more than 20 brothers, and they go on trips whenever possible. Mike's biggest advice to undergraduates: "Live in the house at least two years; that's where you'll make some of your strongest friendships. Give to the house, because it always gives back." Mike and his wife of nearly 25 years, Karen, live in New Lenox, Ill. They have two daughters and one son: Emily (22), Grace (18), and Matt (20). Matt is in a fraternity at the University of Kentucky, Emily was in a sorority during college, and Grace recently joined a sorority as a freshman. "I can see how they all have benefitted from the Greek system, and I'm glad they gave it a chance!" In his spare time, Mike enjoys anything outdoors—golf, swimming, yardwork—and visiting ΛΧΑ brothers. "If I could change anything about my time with Chi Zeta," Mike says, "I wouldn't—except perhaps getting even MORE involved!" You can connect with Mike at mike.kadubek@comcast.net. "My ΛΧΑ brothers are the best group of guys one can imagine. I love them all." T he day started cold and cloudy, a perfect day for Illini football! But then the sun came out at game time, and things went downhill for football, but not for us! Not deterred by the Illini's struggles, the brothers who visited Chi Zeta at Homecoming enjoyed a day of visiting their new home in Champaign and getting caught up on life since campus days. Things started with an informative Alumni Board meeting anchored by Bill Stallman '48 X519, along with President Pete Kale '75 X1020, Matt Murphy '75 X1028, Joe Pawlak '83 X1181, Eric Mennel '84 X1207, and High Pi Steve Parsons ΦΒ341. Visiting brothers Charlie Orr '58 X728, Dick Melinder '60 X755, Jeff Wandell '62 X785, John Schuldt '64 X813, and Ken Martinelli '66 X877 were also attending. Among the normal business was an open discussion of the recent probation previously covered in the letter you recently received. The board members who participated in the extended membership review noted the chapter's commitment to making the needed improvements and adhering to the terms of the probation (see letter on page 2). Others joined in the event throughout the day, including Jim Ehrhart '83 X1180, Randy Johnston '85 X1239, Dave Dutton '87 X1288, Nathan Kaufman '94 X1477, and Farid Zaghloul '09 X1907 (our apologies to those who stopped by but did not sign in). All were impressed by the now-finished formal front room, which had not been completed by last year's big dedication celebration. Work is continuing on the design for woodwork and formal finishes in the two heavily-used libraries, so there's still a great opportunity for you to show support and help us get it done! The house chef, James Pettigrew, and his staff treated all to a delicious lunch of BBQ pulled pork and burgers—perfect fare for an Illinois fall day, win or lose. It may have been the late-50s early-60s era that anchored this year's event (Charlie, Dick, Jeff, John and Ken, joined by Dick's wife Carol and by our good friend B'Ann Johnson, wife of our late brother Keith Johnson '60 X753), but the day was enjoyed by all—except for that final score (46-7, with Wisconsin and Ohio State on deck). All the more reason to start planning now for next year's gathering! Homecoming 2018– Illini Lose, but Choppers Win!
