What do you get when you walk in to your motorcycle meeting and find an investigator from the District Attorney Officer and a police chief? You get the nucleus of a new BMW motorcycle club out of Southern Pines. Those are two of the gentlemen I met when some people in Southern Pines decided to try to get a BMW Motorcycles Of America group together. BMW MOA is not owned or operated by BMW. It is the largest brand motorcycle club in the world. The MOA is made up of volunteers who work hard to make the riding experience and fellowship a pleasant one. Two of its many benefits are the MOA Anonymous book and its BMW Owners News (BMW ON) magazine. For me, the nicest thing about the club is the MOA Anonymous book, which is a directory of BMW owners who have volunteered to help other riders if they need it. Here, people offer their help, services and homes to anyone in the club. Individuals volunteer whatever services they wish to offer and the club member's BMW MOA number is printed in a small book, which I often take on trips. BMW MOA was formed in April of 1972 as an all-volunteer organization. According to the Articles of Incorporation, the BMW MOA was formed for the purpose of operating and maintaining a national BMW motorcycle owners club. The goal of the club is to promote the camaraderie and friendship of individual members and BMW motorcycle clubs. The Southern Pines group was looking for BMW riders, as well as anyone who wants to ride and have a good time; regardless of the bike they own. In the first meeting there were several people from Fayetteville and one couple who came from below Florence, S.C. As with most new meetings and clubs, the group went around the room making introductions and discussed the different ideas and ways to get the club started. It was agreed that there was enough interest to apply for an official chapter. After two months of waiting, the group received the official charter of "The Sandhills BMW Riders" of Chapter 359. North Carolina actually has six other active groups. The Tarheel Travelers, #57; Asheville BMW Riders, #353; BMW Riders of Charlotte, #312; Carolina BMW Motorcycle Owners Association, #220; Coastal Carolina BMW Riders Club, #306; Gonzo Touring Team, #247; and the Knob Mountain NC Motorcycle Chapter, #216. The Sandhills BMW Riders club is in its infancy stage and is looking for riders to become members and officials. The first official meeting is scheduled for Jan. 20, at 1:30 p.m., at Mac's Breakfast Anytime restaurant on 313 SE Broad St, Southern Pines, N.C 28387.
