Contestants included little-known artists, and there were myriad fi rst-time winners. On press day in August in New York City, CEO Doug Hucker noted fewer bracelets and an increase in platinum and rose gold entries. However, it was the Day Wear category that saw the greatest number of entries—not surprising given that it covers the jewels that women wear most often. There was a slight drop in overall Spectrum submissions, but an increase in Cutting Edge entries. Among them: opals, pops of citrus colors and reds, and blue and green gemstones, including the untreated Russian emerald set in a ring that took Best of Show. "Almost the entire Phenome- nal Gemstones category was opal," Hucker added. Best of Show Joseph Ambalu, Amba Gem Corp.
