Crescent Corner A Publication for Alpha Xi Alumnae and Friends by Alpha Xi Alumnae | Fall 2018 Guiding Our Loving Chapter Alumnae Advisors Vital to Alpha Xi's Continued Prosperity S erving as mentors, sisters, and friends to the collegiate Alpha Xi members, alumnae chapter advisors provide a critical voice to help the collegians manage all aspects of the sorority. Each officer in the sorority has an alumna advisor to provide advice or just act as a sounding board. The benefit is not one-sided, however. Dr. Judy Graham, University of Oklahoma '73, gains valuable insight from her work as the ritual advisor—a position she has served in for four years. "Members provide me with new or contrasting views from which I can learn," Judy said. "I am informed by listening to their challenges, concerns, and opinions." She has a long history of service to Gamma Phi Beta, both internationally and locally, and provides a steady hand to the collegians and younger advisors, but modestly says she learns more from them than she teaches. Alpha Xi is blessed to have alumnae advisors who graduated from both SMU and a variety of universities. "Advisors are pivotal to the success of Gamma Phi Beta," Valerie Hall, University of Oklahoma '07, said. "It is helpful for the collegiate chapter to have alumnae present at their events and designated women to contact for guidance, advice, and mentorship. The advisor helps provide a different perspective and challenge to the chapter to try things in a new way." Many Alpha Xis serve in advisory capacities at other Gamma Phi Beta chapters across the U.S. If you are interested in getting involved in your local alumnae chapter as an advisor, we encourage you to use the following link to find a chapter near you: www.gammaphibeta.org/chapterlocator.
