November is National Diabetes Awareness month.
In this issue of You at Your Best, we promote awareness,
prevention and treatment of this deadly disease. More people
have diabetes now than ever before and chances are good
that includes you or someone you know.
In the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed
with diabetes has more than tripled. More than 30 million
adults in this country and about 400,000 in Arkansas have
the disease, and nearly a quarter of them don't even know
they have it. With diabetes reaching epidemic proportions,
it's time we understood and paid attention to this disease
whose serious complications include heart disease, stroke,
amputation, kidney disease, blindness and death.
