"I've kind of always been in retail as a vertical area," she says.
In her last corporate role, she worked for Microsoft, covering
the western United States. She had to do substantial traveling,
however, and so when she became pregnant with her fi rst child,
she decided to leave her job and stay close to home. As she
prepared for the baby's arrival, though, she observed a dearth
in the local marketplace.
"There wasn't really a high-end baby and children's store,"
she says.

Mill Valley Baby and Kids Co., fi lling a niche.
Kanter's second son — she and her husband Marc Sarosi have
three boys, ages 13, 15 and 17 — arrived on Oct. 2, 2003, and
she returned to the store just one day later to discover that
freelance textile designer Serena Dugan had dropped off a
portfolio.
She loved Dugan's work, and so they met and quickly decided
