64 NORTH BAY WOMAN | F A L L 2 0 1 8 NORTH BAY WOMAN | F A L L 2 0 1 8 A taste of Bea Johnson's many tips on how to live a zero waste lifestyle: Start with the 5 "Rs" 1 Refuse – things you do not need. "Every time we accept them we create a demand to make more." 2 Reduce – go through a de-cluttering process. Let go of all the things you do not truly use or need in your home and make them available to your community by giving them away. 3 Reuse – what we consume and cannot refuse or reduce. "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without," ancient proverb. 4 Recycle – what we cannot refuse, reduce or reuse. 5 Rot – compost the rest, which means simply recycling organic materials, returning the nutrients to the soil. Under these headings in the book "Zero Waste Home," there are recipes, explanations and hundreds of tips on how to do all these things. Here's just a sample. n Simply eliminate single-use items. "There is a reusable alternative for every single disposable item out there," Johnson says. "Rediscovering these was an epiphany. Take time to explore alter- natives and give yourself some time to become adjusted to them." n Buy without packaging. "Buy sec- ond-hand as much as possible, and in bulk, using your own containers like glass jars and cloth bags." n "Living a zero waste lifestyle is really only adopting some of the ways people lived for hundreds of years before the disposable culture of the 20th century kicked in. Once you start doing it, you'll fi nd that it is enjoyable. Treat it as an adventure and see what works for you and your family," Johnson says. n >Zero Waste from page 44 Above: A year full of waste in one glass container sits on Bea Johnson's counter; Below: A typical lunch set-up. – Photos provided by Zero Waste Home NBW Fashion 2018 Weddings from fashion pages 35 and 37 Autumnal Bliss: 1.
