Standard Bearer The Fall 2018 Eta Chapter of Sigma Chi at the University of Mississippi Mississippi Sigma Chi House Corporation Makes Significant House Improvements is Summer I t was a busy summer around the house even though we had no tenants. In years past, our house staff was effectively "laid off" every summer and had to file for unemployment. We saw an opportunity to eliminate that complexity and keep the staff on this summer with very little added expense to the House Corporation. I can attest that this decision has paid off handsomely! On August 9 we hosted an alumni steak dinner at the chapter house, which had clearly been cared for all summer long. The staff deep cleaned and took great general care of the house, setting us up nicely for the event and putting us ahead of the game for the return of our brothers this fall. In addition to the house getting the attention of the summer staff, it also got some attention in a much-needed area. One fairly significant item of work we completed this summer was a renovation of the showers in both bathrooms. The tile was so compromised that we were having some major leaking. We tore the showers out down to the studs and completely replaced the tile. It looks great and we feel confident that we have addressed the leak issues. As with any 60-year-old home, issues like failing tile are not a surprise. We'll continue to tackle the time-sensitive issues as they surface, but we also have begun discussion around the long-term needs of the house. Until then, we'll continue to enjoy 121 S. Poole Dr. and hope to see you on a game day this fall. In Hoc, Doug Boone '85 President Mississippi Sigma Chi Association dougrboone@gmail.com Great Turnout by Alumni at Steak Dinner Next Get-Together: November 3 A s Eta Chapter enters the 2018 school year, we have a good bit to celebrate, but also a great deal of change to deal with. This summer we received our 23rd Peterson Significant Chapter award. This was our second-straight award. All of our members and officers are very proud of getting back on the Peterson track, and we hope to continue this winning string for many years to come. With the good news, we also face challenges in the form of continued changes to the fraternity experience. After a horrible 2017 when there were multiple unnecessary deaths at a number of fraternities around the nation, our International Organization is taking a leadership role in the Greek-letter world. As noted in our last newsletter, the fraternity has instituted new alcohol policies in our chapter houses (see http://sigmachi.org/policychanges) and is decreasing the time that a new member will be a pledge. This fall we pledged our class of new members in late September. This group of men will be initiated by November 1 and will be active members before returning home for Thanksgiving.
