3 T he MIT Chapter of Beta eta Pi has continued to strive for excellence and the members are starting to celebrate the health of the Chapter. e Chapter's officers laid out their goals for the spring and fall semester during the Keystone Conference in February and have rallied support within the Chapter to achieve their goals. e main goals focused on improving the first-year experience for new members, brotherhood, philanthropy, and re- cruitment efforts. ese goals have produced the strongest fraternity since recolonization. e Chapter hopes to keep up the momentum to charter at the 180th convention in Oxford, Ohio. From Ideas to Implementation We have spent a considerable amount of time and effort tailoring the pledge program for the first year students to maximize their Beta experience early on and create more passionate members in the future. e largest and most noticeable change is the shi from talking about the values to demonstrating the values. Why talk about the importance of cooperation when we can have the pledges work together to plan a retreat for themselves? e difference is a product that is tangible; something the pledges can experience first-hand and learn the characteristics that make up an MIT Beta. e second large change is the focus on education outside Beta's history. We have small lessons set up for all members of the Chapter that teach lessons relevant to a college student including: how to write a resume, how to use a machine shop tool, how to navigate career fair, etc. ese skills, albeit small, are important for college students to master. Beta Recruits 13 e Chapter spent time developing the pledge program with the expectation of a large pledge class in the fall. anks to the tremendous effort from our recruitment chairmen, Julian Gomez '20 and OFFICERS SET CHAPTER GOALS Brothers Strive to Exceed Expectations Tyler Schoulte '21, we obtained a pledge class of 13 members. With the addition of our new members, our Chapter has grown to 37 members, more than double the number of members we had entering recruitment last fall. All of the current brothers are confident that the pledges will grow into strong leaders who will positively shape the communities inside and outside of Beta. Thousands Raised for Philanthropies In the spring semester, the Chapter was able to participate in a few sororities' philanthropies. In Pi Beta Phi's Ransom for Reading, Beta raised money to support children's literacy. In Kappa Alpha eta's Grill Off, Beta placed third, rais- ing money to support ALS. In Alpha Phi's Heart- throb, Beta placed fih, raising money for wom- en's heart health. All of these efforts helped raise around $3,000 for various causes. e Chapter now has its sights set on hosting its own philan- thropy this fall, as well as partnering with offices on campus to perform community service. Spirit of Friendship e 105th reunion was held in the spring. It was an excellent opportunity for active brothers to learn about the rich heritage of the Chapter and for alumni to reconnect. Alumni observed how the house and the culture has changed over the years. However, the Beta spirit of friendship re- mained constant across the multiple generations present at the reunion. e reunion gave the ac- tive brothers a lot of motivation to continue on the Chapter's current trajectory. Many brothers are dedicated to not only making Beta a home, but a transformative experience for college men.
